A government coronavirus tracking map shows much lower than national average rates across most of the Lancaster district.

Halton and Caton, Hornby, Wray, the Kellets, Quernmore, Wennington and north as far as Leck show fewer than three cases, which means, in the government's view, Covid-19 has been suppressed in these areas.

Lancaster, along with the rest of Lancashire, is currently in Tier 3, or very high alert.

Pubs and restaurants are closed, and households face tough restrictions on meeting up both indoors and outdoors.

Lancaster East and Morecambe South West also show fewer than three cases, resulting in a "suppressed" rate.

Areas south of Lancaster such as Glasson Dock, Ellel, Bailrigg and Galgate, show a low rate with a total of four cases in the week up to December 8.

The rest of the Lancaster district - even those areas with higher population density such as Lancaster Central - show case rates below or around the national average.

The government is set to review its Tier measures on Wednesday December 16, while three households will be able to meet up indoors between December 23 and 27, over the Christmas period.

There have been calls from MPs and businesses for the Lancaster district to be placed into a different Tier than the rest of Lancashire due to there being much lower coronavirus rates in the area.
