Two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of Patrick Maloney at Toddbury Farm residential caravan park near Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire.
Police were called to the travellers’ site at 10.30pm on Tuesday.
Mr Maloney, known as Pat, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
One of his sons was also injured in the incident as he tried to help his father.
Eyewitnesses say an argument broke out with another family, and Mr Maloney was allegedly run over repeatedly by a van.
He had only moved to the caravan site, where his brother Joseph already lived, four weeks ago.
Mr Maloney’s mother Margaret still lives in Limes Avenue, Morecambe. His father Paddy sadly died last year.
A female relative said Mr Maloney was “a quiet man, a family man who loved his children and thought the world of his wife.”
She said: “He was a peacemaker, you would never see Pat starting a fight or arguing.”
Police confirmed a 24-year-old man and a woman, 42, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Both remain in custody.
Det Insp Alan Page from the Major Crime Unit said: “Though we appreciate the traumatic effect that an incident such as this will have on the traveller and wider community, we would urge members of the public not to be alarmed.
“We are conducting a full and thorough investigation into the events and will maintain a visible, heightened presence in the area for reassurance and intelligence-gathering processes.”
A post-mortem examination is expected to take place on Friday.
