The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday, April 4 but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Crewe to Junction 19 Knutsford

Sections of the hard shoulder on the M6 between Crewe and Knutsford will be closed while drainage, structural and other surveys are carried out. Some lane closures will also been needed overnight, although the motorway will remain open at all times. The scheme is due to be completed by Friday 2 May.

M6 Junctions 20 to 21 Thelwall Viaduct

A scheme is taking place to replace expansion joints along the Thelwall Viaduct. There will be some overnight closures to install a contraflow system, which will help keep four lanes in each direction of the motorway while the work is carried out. When one of the bridges is being worked on, three lanes will run almost normally but with the fourth lane switched onto the opposite carriageway. All of the lanes will be narrowed during the work, with a 40mph speed limit in place.

M6 Junction 38 Tebay

A contraflow system is in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by mid-April.

M6 Junctions 41 Wigton to 42 Carlisle

Work is taking place to replace road markings and reflective road studs on the M6 between Wigton and Carlisle. All the work will be done overnight – between 8pm and 6am each night - along short sections of the carriageway. A full overnight closure of the northbound carriageway at junction 41 will be required from 8pm on Saturday 5 April until 6am on Sunday 6 April. Drivers will need to leave the motorway on the exit slip road and re-join it from the entry slip road.

M55 Junction 1 Preston

The exit and entry slip roads at junction 1 will be closed overnight for maintenance work until Wednesday 16 April. The work will be carried out between 8pm and 6am, with a diversion in place.

M56 Junctions 8 Altrincham to 9 Lymm

A project is taking place to install a new concrete safety barrier along a half-a-mile section of the M56. Drainage improvements and resurfacing work will also be carried out, and the scheme is due to be completed by Friday 16 May. The motorway will remain open at all times but with a lane three closure throughout the project. Lane two of the carriageway in each direction will also close overnight throughout the project. Drivers will be able to use the hard shoulder as a running lane throughout the work, and a 50mph speed limit will be in place.

A66 Brough

Resurfacing work is taking place on parts of the westbound side of the A66 dual carriageway around Brough. All the work is taking place between 8pm and 6am each night to minimise inconvenience to road users, with a 40mph speed limit past the roadworks.

A66 Cockermouth

Temporary traffic lights and lane closures are in place on the section of the A66 near Cockermouth while resurfacing work is carried out. The scheme is due to be completed by Thursday 10 April.

A590 Ulverston

Resurfacing work on the A590 Canal Street in Ulverston between Booths Roundabout and the junction with Swan Street is due to be completed by Friday 11 April. The work will be carried out overnight between 7.30pm and 6am to minimise disruption, with vehicles in each direction taking it in turns to travel through the roadworks. A temporary 10mph speed limit will be in place, along with a diversion for wide vehicles.

A590 Brettargh Holt Roundabout

Overnight lane closures will be in place at the Brettargh Holt roundabout, which links the A590 to the A591, while maintenance work takes place. The work is being carried out between 8pm and 6am from Monday 7 until Thursday 10 April.

A595 Egremont

Pedestrians and cyclists in Egremont will soon benefit from a new signal-controlled toucan crossing to help them cross the A595. The work to install the crossing is being carried out from 9.30am to 3.30pm each day, and temporary traffic lights will be in place along with a 40mph speed limit.
