Motorway closed in both directions due to "police incident"

A full motorway closure has been in place while emergency services dealt with a "distressed" woman on a bridge.

Just after 8pm on Sunday evening (April 22) Lancashire Police were informed of the individual concerned between junctions 33 and 34 of the M6 motorway.

Lancashire Police's Force Incident Manager said: "We received a report just after 8pm of a distressed female on a bridge.

"Officers attended and spoke to her and she came away from the bridge and we have taken her into the care of the ambulance services.

Police requested ambulance attend the scene to see to the welfare of the woman.

A full road closure was in place on the northbound carriageway at junction 33, just after Forton Services.

The closure started on the southbound carriageway at junction 34 for Lancaster.

At around 8:40pm police confirmed that traffic had been released.

Taking to Twitter, they said: "The distressed female on the over bridge has engaged in conversation with our Lancashire Officers and is now safely off the bridge."
