Man pronounced dead at scene of M6 crash after car collides into bridge near Carnforth

A 68-year-old man has died after his car collided with a bridge support after it had left the carriageway on the M6 near Carnforth.

Police were called to reports of an accident on the M6 at junction 35 (Carnforth Interchange) at around 5.20pm yesterday (Tuesday, May 26)

A Hyundai IONIQ car travelling northbound collided with a bridge support after it had left the carriageway, according to police.

The driver, a 68-year-old man from Hove, East Sussex, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now appealing for information and are keen to speak to anyone with dash cam footage of the incident.

Sgt Adam Dawson, of Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations, said: "These are tragic circumstances and my thoughts are with the driver and his family at this very sad and difficult time.

"We are continuing to appeal for witnesses and would encourage anyone with information, or dash cam footage, to come forward."

The carriageway was closed for more than six hours while accident investigators attended the scene, with a diversion route put in place.
