POLICE said a serious road accident in Heysham which left four men injured could easily have resulted in fatalities.

Heysham Road was closed for several hours on Sunday after a silver Renault Laguna, travelling towards Heysham Power Station, was involved in a head-on collision with a maroon Citroen Picasso taxi, which was heading to Morecambe. Debris was strewn over several hundred metres and police who attended said it was a “scene of devastation”.

A bus and lorry were used to help block the road to any oncoming traffic following the accident, which happened just after 9am.

Emergency crews from the police, fire and ambulance attended the scene. The air ambulance was also called out but casualties were eventually taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary by road.
