Two lanes had initially been closed between junctions 15 (Stoke-on-Trent) and 14 (Stafford North) after a crash at around 11.30am.

Emergency services attended the scene and Highways have now closed the third lane to allow the damaged vehicles to be recovered.

Highways are warning of severe delays with three miles of queuing traffic expected to be held for around 50 minutes.

A Highways spokesman said: "We now have a full closure on the carriageway at M6 southbound between J15 (StokeonTrent) to J14 (StaffordNorth), in order to recover the damaged vehicles.

The crash occurred in the vicinity of an ongoing full-day lane closure, between northbound junctions 13 and 14, after Highways closed the overtaking lane to allow repairs to be carried out on a defect in the road.

The emergency lane closure had reduced the M6 southbound to two lanes, leading to slow traffic on busy stretches with high lorry traffic.
