Police say a 20-year-old man and his passenger are "lucky to be alive" after crashing into a tree in Morecambe.

The young man had been driving a silver Mazda MX5 along Westgate, towards the Shrimp roundabout, when he lost control outside the Toby Carvery.

The crash happened shortly before midnight on Friday (October 23), when the car mounted the pavement and hit a tree outside the restaurant.

The incident led to police and ambulance crews rushing to the scene and closing Westgate for more than an hour.

Police say the driver was reportedly drunk and had failed a roadside breath test.

Both the driver and his front seat passenger sustained minor injuries, but police said they were "very, very lucky" to survive.

Pictures taken at the scene show the wrecked car with serious impact damage near its front wheel on the passenger side, where it had struck a tree on the pavement.
