Both Kirkby Lonsdale and Garstang are among the most desirable places to live in the UK according to a new poll.

The towns have been named in the Sunday Times’ highly-respected 101 Best 101 Places to Live in Britain based on shops and services, outdoor spaces, crime rates, house prices, school performance and community spirit.

Garstang topped the north west list, Kendal was second and Kirkby Lonsdale was listed third in the regional shortlist.

Kirkby Lonsdale Town Council chairman Allan Muirhead, who has lived in the town for 28 years, said: “We are delighted. Kirkby Lonsdale has always felt special to those who live here but it’s nice to be recognised.Second home owners have set up here after visiting.”

Mr Muirhead said the Lunesdale beauty spot was still developing, with plans afoot for a development of 80 new homes on the edge of the town.

He added: “It’s a sign of the importance of Kirkby within South Lakeland as a hub town for people who want to live and work in the area and have their children educated here.”

Meanwhile, the Bishop of Lancashire Julian Henderson said he was delighted at Garstang’s place in the list.

He visited the town early in his tenure following his inauguration last October.

Bishop Julian said: “The county of Lancashire has many fabulous places to live and work and these nominations remind us of that.

“I send my best wishes to residents of Garstang on their fantastic achievement.”

Sunday Times home editor Helen Davies said: “The Best Places guide is dedicated to celebrating Britain’s abundance of great cities, towns and villages.

“We combine in-depth data with first-hand personal experience to produce an authoritative list.”

Skipton in North Yorkshire was named the best place to live in the UK.
