Councillors voted in favour of replacing Mark Cullinan when he retires next year. The council could have opted to share the role with another local authority or scrap it altogether. But Coun Eileen Blamire, council leader, said: “To share our chief executive would downgrade our district and say Lancaster only merits a part-timer.”

A 20-strong committee of councillors, chaired by Coun Blamire, will recommend who takes over the role after Mr Cullinan leaves in June 2016.
