Take on international chess great at library

Up to 25 people can sign up to challenge Nigel Davies at the event to be held on Saturday September 26.

This innovative event, the idea of library assistant, Gary Hutchinson, will give challengers the opportunity to test their skill against a recognised chess expert.

Nigel will display his ability by playing against multiple opponents, at the same time. He will make a move against one competitor, then against each player in turn, until all the games are finished.

County Coun Marcus Johnstone, cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: “This is a superb chance to play a game of chess against someone who has the highest level of expertise and talent.

“I’m thrilled that Nigel has agreed to do this. I hope that his involvement will really encourage people to play chess to improve, or to take up the game.

“I hope that lots of people come along to take up the challenge and enjoy this special experience.”

Nigel is from the north west and has previously won accolades including the British Boys Championship and British Rapidplay Chess Championship.

As well as being a recognised Grandmaster, he is also a chess coach and writer.

The event will run from 11am, and there will be an opportunity to meet and speak with Nigel afterwards.

Tickets to enter the chess display cost £9.50 for adults and £6.50 for under 16s. They’re available by calling in at the library or by calling 0300 123 6703.

Lancaster library holds a chess club on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons.

The Saturday club is run for children and young people and is supported by the Chess in Schools and Communities initiative.
