A young seal which found itself 40 miles inland was rescued and released back into the sea.

Thought to be less than one-year-old, the lost pup was seen in a tributary of the River Eden at Appleby, Cumbria.

The three-feet long, 27kg mammal is believed to have become disorientated from its home on the Solway.

Morecambe Bay-based Bay Search and Rescue captured the seal and took it in a dog cage to Walney Island, Barrow, where it was returned to the sea on Sunday.

In 2006, a seal was found four miles inland at Capernwray, but Cumbria Wilidlife Trust said the seal at Appleby had travelled an “amazing distance”.
