Stolen Land Rover in police chase along motorway

A prolific Padiham car crook who led police on a motorway chase in a stolen Land Rover has been jailed for 21 months.

Psychotic drug addict Barry Duxbury (39) who had been at the wheel of the vehicle an hour after it was stolen in a farm raid in Carnforth, hit a police car twice as it tried to force him off the road. The defendant, who had been in convoy with another car, was caught in Burnley, the town’s crown court heard. The defendant had a “terrible” record, including three convictions for dangerous driving.

Duxbury, of Burnley Road, admitted handling stolen goods, dangerous driving and possessing amphetamine, last December 16th. He was banned for two years and must take an extended driving test.

Prosecutor Miss Emma Kehoe said the Land Rover Defender was stolen from a barn and seen on the M65 at junction five. An officer followed while awaiting further patrols. A white Corsa was in front of the Land Rover.

Miss Kehoe said another officer attended and pursued Duxbury from junction nine. The defendant collided with the police vehicle twice. The officer was trying to drive down the side of the Land Rover and force it off the motorway. The white Corsa police believed to be travelling in convoy evaded detection.

At Brierfield, Duxbury went on the wrong side of a roundabout, through a red light, then drove onto Barden Lane, Burnley, and turned right into oncoming traffic on Colne Road. Duxbury then headed for Accrington Road, went through Stoops estate and abandoned the vehicle on Richard Taylor, for Duxbury, said a significant drug problem had ruined his life and he suffered from resulting psychosis. “He could have stopped and should have stopped.”
