More than 2,800 people took part in the Wicked Welly Walk on Sunday, a 4km trek along the route of the new M6 to Heysham Link Road, raising more than £23,000 for St John’s Hospice and Costain 150 charities.

It was a Halloween themed event for the whole family – including dogs – and walkers were able to learn about the progress of the new road as they went along.

The first ‘wave of wellies’ departed at 11am from Lancaster and Morecambe College and followed a route past Torrisholme and the crematorium to the A6 near Beaumont, finishing at Costain’s base at Halton Army Camp.

Along the route there were plenty of spooky surprises and trick or treat sweets for the children.

This is the second event that the hospice and Costain have teamed up on after
another incredibly successful Welly Walk in April.

Catherine Butterworth, head of fundraising at St John’s Hospice, said: “This has been another amazing event working in partnership with Costain, which shows not only how the community are supporting this road scheme, but also their constant commitment to support their local hospice.
