Vale 2 brought down the curtain on team squash at the Vale of Lune on Thursday after almost 50 years of competition.

With closure of the club’s two courts only days away, the seconds had the honour of playing the last competitive game at Powderhouse Lane but faced Blackpool Cricket Club 4 who proved too strong and sealed their promotion with a 5-0 win.

Junior Will Cadman at No 5 was on court first and put in a great effort. He lost the first ame11-15 and his experienced opponent took the next two to seal a 3-0 victory.

Steve Thompson came out of retirement to play his first – and last – game of the season at number four but lost 3-0, while James Boswell at three took Vale’s only point of the night, but his 3-1 loss was the only high point.

Team captain Stuart Featon lost 3-0, so it was left to the youthful Max Castaldi to sign off with a win but it was not to be as he plunged to a 3-0 defeat.

However, Vale 2 ended the season third in Division Five North of the North West Counties Squash League.

Vale 1 were away to David Lloyd Chorley 2 but could not field a team and lost 5-0.

Their final fixture of the season is away against Division Three Central North leaders Leyland Leisure 1.
