Search resumes in bay for missing kite-surfer

A huge search of the Morecambe Bay area has resumed this morning after a kite-surfer went missing in the sea near Glasson Dock.

The 62-year-old man, thought to be from the Cockerham area, was last seen while out in the water between 4.30pm and 5pm on Sunday, January 25.

Kevin Jackson, operations manager at Morecambe Lifeboats (RNLI), said conditions were “terrible”, on Sunday afternoon when the man went out as part of a group, and didn’t return.

Searches are now underway with HM Coastguard between Blackpool and the Kent Channel, with the search and rescue helicopter expected to be searching again soon.

He said: “The search is wide reaching, including Fleetwood, Blackpool, Morecambe, the Kent Channel and Pilling.

“The conditions yesterday were terrible, there was a big fog bank, it was very dark and windy.

“We’ve not recovered anything like a surf board yet, but there are a lot of people out searching on boats, on the hovercraft, and on foot round the coast.

“We’ll keep going until we find him.”
