Salt Ayre Leisure Centre builds a better future with top award

Lancaster City Council, along with partners Alliance Leisure, have won another top award for their redevelopment of Salt Ayre Leisure Centre.

The redevelopment was recognised at the inaugural ukactive uprising Awards, winning the New Concept, Build and Design of the Year category.

The awards recognise the contribution that physical activity has in all aspects of society.

Coun Darren Clifford, cabinet member with responsibility for sport and leisure, said: “This is an enormous achievement and testament to the hard work, energy and commitment by officers throughout the council, along with our partners Alliance Leisure, to this important project.

“In just a few short years Salt Ayre has been transformed with spectacular new facilities, which in turn has increased the number of customers and income.

“This award celebrates that work and everyone involved should be hugely proud of what they have helped the council to deliver - a leisure destination that has something for the entire community to come along and enjoy.”

Salt Ayre Leisure Centre has undergone a total transformation since the £5million redevelopment project was launched in 2016.

New facilities include a revamped gym, a new immersive cycle studio and functional training suite, XHeight indoor climbing, Gravity outdoor flight tower and Energy indoor soft play area.

The most recent additional is Tranquil Spa, which includes a thermal journey, aroma steam room, herbal sauna, ice chute and a watermill sauna.

Speaking about the win, Sarah Watts, CEO at Alliance Leisure, added: “This award recognises the profound impact the creation of modern physical activity spaces which inspire and motivate, can have on behaviour change across whole communities. At Salt Ayre Leisure Centre in Lancashire, our redesign of a tired, disengaged leisure centre has resulted in a 72 per cent uplift in customer visits.

“Working in Partnership with Lancaster City Council, we have breathed new life into facility and created a vibrant environment which is stimulating participation on a mass scale, across all segments of the community.”
