A former Heysham High School pupil has been transformed into a Royal Navy sailor after an intensive 10 week training course.
Gareth Parker, 26, has been put through his paces, undertaking a series of physical and mental challenges in order to reach the essential standards required by every member of the Naval Service.
Gareth was selected as the class leader at the beginning of training and his duties included taking charge of his fellow recruits in the absence of their instructor.
Gareth chose a career in the services following in the footsteps of his brother, General Technician Electrical Matthew Parker, aged 29, who has been serving in the RAF for four years in Waddington, Lincolnshire.
Gareth previously worked as a Royal Mail post man.
He said: “I joined the Royal Navy because I wanted a career with a future and the opportunity for promotion. I also wanted to travel and learn new skills. Training has certainly been testing and difficult at times, however it has its rewards.
“I look forward to achieving my full potential and truly experiencing life without limits.”
Gareth’s determined attitude has driven him to successfully complete his initial training; the next port of call for him will be at HMS Sultanfor four months training.
