Radio boss to meet Prime Minister at flood heroes event

The boss of Lancaster's radio station will meet the Prime Minister at a special reception for heroes of the floods.

Bill Johnston, managing director of The Bay, will represent the station at a ‘Flood Heroes’ event at 10 Downing Street on Monday.

David Cameron will thank key figures and organisations who helped people during the floods and blackouts.

Mr Johnston said: “This will be a great experience and I’m very proud to be representing the whole Bay team who worked so hard for the community in such challenging conditions while our own building was under water. “Many people have referred to us as their ‘fourth emergency service’ or a ‘lifeline’ and the staff, across all station departments, are very grateful for everyone’s support.”

The Bay will also be given a community award from Morecambe Town Council in recognition of the information they gave the public during the blackout and floods last December, when they stayed on air despite their own St George’s Quay studios suffering severe flood damage.

Councillor Margaret Pattison said: “I am proud and honoured to nominate The Bay for a community award.

“The radio presenters gave a high level of community support when all the networks were out.”

The community award and a recognition certificate will be presented at the annual town meeting on April 28.
