Prized Alhambra autograph collection revealed

The Alhambra Theatre was a place which held many fond memories for Morecambe residents and visitors alike.

For Barrie Wood it was part of his childhood, his playground, a place where he could hang with the stars and watch his dad perform.

Barrie’s father, Sam B Wood, was secretary of the theatre on Marine Road West and a famous musician, composing more than 2,000 pieces of music, including the Alhambra’s signature tune itself.

In this first part of a series, Looking Back takes a look at some of Barrie’s most prized autographs he collected from the theatre as a young boy.

The pictures show who performed at the theatre during Mr Wood’s time and they range from musical acts to, what would be deemed as controversial presently, a performing monkey, all of which have been kept for more than 50 years.

Barrie, who lives in Kirkby Lonsdale, is keen to preserve his father’s and the theatre’s legacy for many years to come.

Next week we will look further into the Woods’ life and their connection to what was one of the resort’s most historical theatres.
