Prison could stand empty

HMP LANCASTER Castle looks set to be “mothballed” and could stand empty for at least three years following its closure at the end of March.

The Duchy of Lancaster, which owns the castle, says it has not received an official notice from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to terminate its lease, which comes with a three-year notice period.

The MoJ said it wouldn’t comment on when it was going to submit the official notice, or what would happen to the castle during the notice period.

A ministry spokesman added that the time was right to phase out Lancaster Castle in order to make its prison estate more efficient and effective in the long term. He also said that no compulsory redundancies were anticipated among prison staff.
