Work on the new Primark store in Lancaster has been delayed as one of the contractors has gone into administration.

Contractors GB Building Solutions carrying out the works on the new Primark store in Marketgate Shopping Centre have gone into administration.

Construction work on the new Primark store started in September last year and was set to open this Autumn.

But now the completion date is unknown after the contractor filed notice of intention to appoint administrators on March 4.

Roubaix Group, who own Market Gate Shopping Centre, said they’re fully committed to seeing the work completed.

Chris Beckerman, managing Director of Roubaix Group, said: “We have a clear strategy for investing in and improving Market Gate and will continue to deliver on that, starting with the new Primark store.

“These problems with the contractor are unfortunate but will be resolved as quickly as possible and we look forward to confirming more details on a revised timetable for opening the new Primark as soon as possible.”

The new Primark store is set to be the largest anchor store in the town.

The 50,000 sq ft anchor store will occupy the site of the former market hall, along with parts of Gillison’s Lane.
