Police in Lancaster are treating a fire which led to the evacuation of 30 people from a block of flats as suspicious.

Residents were told to leave their homes in the Station Road complex after the blaze engulfed a car in a basement car park shortly after 3.30am on Sunday.

They were allowed to return around an hour later after three fire crews brought the flames under control.

Two appliances from Lancaster and a third from Morecambe were sent to the scene, where crews found the car well alight with a large amount of smoke coming from the area.

The fire gutted the vehicle and affected other parts of the car park.

Smoke badly damaged a further six cars while two apartments suffered light smoke damage, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said the car had been set on fire beneath the block of flats.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lancaster CID, quoting the log reference LC-20130922-0339.
