The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 12 September and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Barthomley

Overnight work is underway to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at junction 16 of the M6. The scheme will provide a third lane on the north and southbound exit slip roads and the approach on the A500. Additional traffic lights will also be installed. There will be some overnight closures of slip roads and the A500 and B5078 at different stages of the project. A temporary speed limit of 50mph is also in place, and the project is expected to be completed by the middle of December.

M6 Junctions 20 to 21 Thelwall Viaduct

Work on the Thelwall Viaduct has almost been completed, and the temporary contraflow lane, 40mph speed limit and narrow lanes have now been removed. Joint replacement work on the viaduct is still required on the northbound exit slip road at junction 21 but this will be limited to occasional overnight lane and slip road closures at weekends.

M6 Junction 26 Orrell

A major project is taking place at Orrell Interchange, which will see extra lanes and traffic lights added to the junction with the M58 and the A577. The initial stage of work will require overnight closures of the link road between 10pm and 5am. The junction will remain open for vehicles travelling between the M6 and the M58, but a diversion will be in place for local traffic coming on or off the motorways at the interchange. The majority of the work for the rest of the project will take place overnight or at weekends and will require some closures of the southbound slip roads, the roundabout and the link road to the A577.

M6 Junction 32 Broughton Interchange

A project is being carried out to reduce congestion around the motorway junction which connects the M6 to the Blackpool-bound M55. There will be narrow lanes, plus some overnight slip road and carriageway closures until the project is completed in October.

M6 Junction 38 Brough to Junction 39 Shap

Work will be taking place from Saturday 13 September to modify the central reservation to make future bridge repairs safer and easier. The work is being carried out near Castle Howe bridge, just north of junction 38 of the motorway and is due to be completed by Monday 13 October. Lane 3 will be closed on both sides of the motorway around the clock, and some overnight closures will also be required of lane 2 along the southbound carriageway.

M56 Junction 12 Runcorn to Junction 14 Helsby

Work is taking place to resurface the westbound carriageway of the M56 between junction 12 at Runcorn and junction 14 at Helsby. The work will also include the replacement of worn road markings on the eastbound carriageway. All of the resurfacing will be done overnight between 10pm and 5am, Mondays to Fridays. Lane closures and some overnight diversions will be in place. During the day, drivers may also notice some hard shoulder closures associated with the work.

M60 Junction 8 Sale to M62 Junction 20 Rochdale

A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The first stage of the smart motorway project will see engineers carry out site surveys and ground investigation work, with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers.

M60 Junction 24 Denton

Phase two of the Denton Island improvements is underway at junction 24 of the M60, where the motorway meets the M67 and the A57– a key commuter route into Manchester city centre. The whole project is due to be completed by Friday 19 December with most of the work carried out overnight. Some road and lane closures will be necessary.

A66 Appleby to Keswick

Three schemes to upgrade sections of the A66 between Appleby-in-Westmorland and Keswick are due to begin on Monday 15 September. The projects are expected to take up to six weeks to complete and include improving drainage, resurfacing the road and providing better road markings. A full closure of the westbound side of the A66 dual carriageway between the entry and exit slip roads for Appleby will be required overnight from 8pm on Friday 19 September until 6am on Saturday 20 September, with traffic being diverted through the town centre.

A66 Kirkby Thore

Temporary traffic lights will be in place for drainage work on the A66 near Kirby Thore until Monday 27 October. The work will be carried out at off-peak times during the day, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, and overnight between 8pm and 6am.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

The westbound carriageway on the A66 will require a series of closures while the Forestry Commission carries out tree felling at Wythop Forest. A contraflow system will be in place with a lane running in each direction along the eastbound carriageway. Temporary traffic lights will also be used on some occasions. The project is due to be completed by the end of November.

A590 Ulverston to Brettargh Holt roundabout

A series of projects are taking place to tackle wear and tear on the A590. All the work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am and should be completed by Friday 20 September. Temporary traffic lights and lane closures will be in place.

A585 Thornton-Cleveleys

Temporary traffic lights and lane closures will be in place on the A585 between West Drive and Bourne Way in Thornton-Cleveleys while work is carried out to covert the road into a dual carriageway. The work is due to be completed in December.
