Pizza takeaway boss is fined

The owner of a Morecambe takeaway has been ordered to pay a total of £4,717 in fines and costs after pleading guilty to contravening food safety regulations.

Mr Mohammad Naeem Aslam, the sole proprietor of Pizza King on Marine Road Central in Morecambe, pleaded guilty to numerous contraventions relating to food hygiene under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.

Issues identified during a routine food hygiene inspection by a Lancaster City Council food safety officer included poor standard of cleanliness, inadequate pest control measures and risk of cross contamination between raw and ready to eat food.Aslam pleaded guilty to the offences and was fined £1,880 with £2,667 costs and a further £170 victim surcharge when he appeared before magistrates inLancaster.

The prosecution was brought following the business’s failure to take notice of previous warnings in relation to the contraventions identified. However since the inspection in September 2015, significant improvements have been made by Mr Aslam and the business is now rated as 3 (Generally Satisfactory) on the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Coun Karen Leytham, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said: “We are pleased with the outcome of this prosecution and hope its sends a strong message to food businesses.”
