Young friends from Morecambe take on Wainwright walks in Lake District to raise money for Lancaster charity

Seven-year-old Theo Berry and his best pal Daniel Middleton, six, took on some of the famous Wainwright walks.

And they have so far managed to raise more than £1,300 for St John's Hospice.

The Lancaster hospice helped care for Theo's grandad Mick Berry before he passed away in 2015, and the family also has other links to the hospice which has made it a charity close to their hearts.

When Theo's mum Hannah realised she would not be able to do a 40-mile hospice charity walk from Keswick to Barrow earlier this year due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the family came up with a new way to support the hospice instead.

"I felt bad that I couldn't do the walk and that the hospice didn't have the chance to do a lot of fundraising this year," Hannah said.

"Theo's grandad had a lot of support from the hospice before he passed away. Even though Theo was only little they were very close.

"We have really got into walking a lot this year so I thought we could get the boys to walk the equivalent number of miles on the Wainwrights."

Along with husband Gavin and Daniel's dad Neal, Hannah and the boys began their challenge in the summer.

And the boys, who are also next-door neighbours in Heysham Road, finished off their challenge on Monday with a final seven peak walk of 9.1 miles - bringing them to a total of 44 miles.

The full list of Wainwrights the boys have completed is: Cold Pike, Long Top, Harter Fell, Kentmere Pike, Seat Sandal, Shipman Knotts, Gibson Knot, Helm Crag, Red Screes, Little Heart Crag, High Hartsop Dodd, Pavey Ark, Sergeant Man, High Rise, Thunacar Knott. Pike o’Stickle, Loft Crag and Harrison Stickle.

"We are planning to keep going since we’ve raised so much," Hannah said. "We don’t have to raise anymore although it would be great if we could but we feel like we should should keep going with how much we have raised!

"We’ve had a great time. Don’t get me wrong there has been plenty of moaning and not just from the kids! But we are so proud of our boys and the hard work they have put into raising the money we have for St John’s."

Hannah's mum and stepdad have also raised money for the charity at their shop, Kennedy's Butchers, in Morecambe.
