Club chairman Mike Hinchcliffe said: "It's very disappointing, it's difficult to understand things like this sometimes.

"The groundsman has been very busy doing his repair work; we have got a Heysham Atoms game on Saturday and a Morecambe Ladies FC game on Sunday and we are hopeful that we will have the pitch in a playable condition. A decision will be made on Friday.

"It's not ideal but it could have been worse and we are doing our best to repair it."

Mike said the local community had been very supportive of the club, including an offer from Bay Communications to help upgrade their CCTV system.

The club has recently invested in new facilities at the ground, including refurbishment work in the clubhouse.

They regularly host community and charity events, including the Neuro Drop-In. They also offer a takeaway service from the bar.

"Who they were and why they did it, we have got no idea, but we have got a good ground team to help us make sure we are not too affected, but it's work we could have done without," Mike said.

"It's all volunteers here working to provide the club and facilities for the local community.

"We are a local community rugby club and we do a lot more than just rugby here - we have facilities we want people to use and enjoy."

The club posted CCTV footage of the incident on their Facebook page, showing a car entering the pitch and driving across it over the course of a couple of minutes, at one point spinning around several times on one patch of the field.

The vandalism happened at around 10.45pm on Sunday May 2, and the club now hope people will come forward with information.
