Pupils around Lancaster and Morecambe district celebrate GCSE results

Pupils at schools across the Lancaster district have been collecting their GCSE results.

More GCSE subjects were being graded using the number system this year, with 9 being the top score and 1 the lowest.

This has been phased in since 2017 to replace the previous A* to G grades.

Starting with English and maths, the new number system is now being used for almost all GCSE subjects.

Lancaster Royal Grammar School students are celebrating outstanding results.

Results showed a further improvement on last year, with more than half of all pupils gaining at least seven grades 7, 8 and 9 in their GCSEs (the equivalent of former A and A* grades).

40 per cent of results across all subjects were awarded the very top 8 and 9 grades. More than forty students are celebrating seven or more grades 8 and 9, including eight students who achieved 10 or 11 GCSEs at grade 8 and 9.

Headmaster Dr Chris Pyle said: “It is fantastic to see the energy and hard work of all our pupils recognised in these excellent grades.

Congratulations to our students on an excellent set of GCSE results, which will be a springboard to their further success at A-level and beyond.

At Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School, 75 per cent of grades were at grade 7 and above (equivalent to grade A and above) with over half (51.7 per cent) of all grades at 8 and above (equivalent to A* and above).

Most students sat 10 GCSEs with some also studying an additional maths qualification. There were many high achieving performances including two students who gained grade 9 in all 10 exams and a further 16 students achieved all 10 GCSEs at grades 8 and 9.

The year group have not only excelled themselves academically but have contributed very positively to the school and wider community. Record numbers completed the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and benefited from the national citizen service scheme.

Head Jackie Cahalin said: “I would like to thank the staff at LGGS who have worked very hard to prepare the students so well for their exams.

“We are delighted with the high number of students achieving Grade 9 this year in a wide variety of subjects. Our students have achieved the highest grades in History, English Literature, Art and Design, Physics, Science, French and Polish.

“The school has also significantly improved results in Art, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education, Drama, Computer Science, English Language and English Literature. Everyone is to be congratulated for their hard work and the effort they have made to ensure the best possible outcomes for students in Morecambe.

Helen Seddon, headteacher of Our Lady’s Catholic College, said: “We are delighted that our year 11 students have once again secured great outcomes after five years’ hard work with us at Our Lady’s.

“They have successfully taken on the stretching 9-1 GCSE qualifications and we are delighted that an even higher number of our students have achieved the grade 8 and gold star grade 9 than last year.

“We are particularly proud of: Luke Hodgson who received: 4 Grade 9, 2 Grade 8 and 4 Grade 7; Kathryn McCafferty who received: 2 Grade 9, 5 Grade 8, 2 Grade 7 and a Grade 6; Isaac Bates who received: 3 Grade 9, 2 Grade 8, 4 Grade 7 and a Grade A; as well as many others who have all achieved outstanding results.

“As ever, the majority of our vocational students have achieved excellent BTEC grades; however, it would be remiss at this time not to pass our thoughts to the students at our school and our neighbouring schools who have had their grades compromised by the nationwide, completely unfair, last minute shifting of the grade boundaries for the new BTEC Technical awards.”

Students at Dallam School have been applauded for their efforts and dedication after securing a set of GCSE results that have sparked huge celebrations across the school.

The school, based in Milnthorpe, has seen results improve against nearly every measure – with many students securing grades that significantly exceeded their hopes and expectations.

Nigel Whittle, headteacher, said: “These are an incredibly positive set of results. The percentage of grade 9s and is up. The number of students securing 5 or above in English and maths is up by over 20%. There are some subjects who have also seen very significant increases.

“In short, when you look at the progress that has been made, every exam sat is up by over a third of a grade on last year when boarders are included. This is testament to our talented and hard-working students, and the staff who have gone above and beyond to support our young people, particularly over the last 12 months.”

Among the smiling faces was Maddie Doran who secured a very impressive five grade 9s and five grade 8s. Maddie said: “It is a massive shock. I am thinking this might be the start of a career in Marine Biology…there is so much we don’t yet know about the oceans.”

Identical twins Joe and Lorn Buchanan secured 20 passes between them, including 10 at grade 6 or above. Lorn said: “We were really nervous and worked really hard to get the results.”

There were also a host of students who achieved results that were on average at least a grade higher than their predictions. James Roberts proved he is on the right track for a career in the railway sector by securing four 8s, five 7s and a 6.

He said: “I definitely want to stay on for Dallam’s Sixth Form. This school has been fantastic and I am delighted by my results.”

Enid Fraser, chair of the Multi Academy Trust of which Dallam is a part, said: “These are pleasing results.

A great deal has been achieved over the last 12 months, and our students and staff should be applauded for how they have embraced the challenges that have been set.

“I am also delighted that the school has secured a “hat-trick” in terms of exam results. Dallam’s International Baccalaureate results were above the world average. The A-Level results saw the number of students achieving three A*- Bs go up by 50% and the school can also celebrate a step-change in GCSE outcomes.

Giggleswick School is celebrating GCSE success with students achieving more than double the national average of top three grades, despite concerns over the new tougher number grading system.

Many students achieved over and above their predicted grades across a wide range of subjects.

Giggleswick’s musicians were top performers with 75% achieving the higher grades 7-9 (A*A).

Science has always been an area of particular strength at Giggleswick and this year brought more GCSE success with an impressive 81% achieving Grades 7-9 (A*A) in chemistry and a 100% pass rate across all sciences. There was also a clean sweep of 100% passes in art, biology, computing, Latin, music and further maths.

Headmaster Mark Turnbull said: “Just as we saw in our A-level results last week, it is wonderful to see our GCSE students adding significant value to their grade projections through their hard work, support of their teachers and embracing all the opportunities available to them at school.”
