Meanwhile, Lancaster City Council put up its storm boards along Morecambe promenade yesterday afternoon as a precaution.

A spokesman said: "We’ll be deploying the storm boards along Morecambe promenade as a precautionary measure in anticipation of expected high tides and strong winds.

"The bespoke boards perfectly fit each of the pedestrian entrances to the promenade and prevent any water, sand and shingle from spilling over onto the road.

"The storm boards will remain in place until at least Monday."

The wet and windy weather came as Storm Ellen arrived in northern England today, Friday.

A swathe of strong winds were expected to sweep across much of the UK ahead of the weekend, with the Met Office warning of widespread travel chaos and flooding.

A yellow weather warning for wind is in force across all of England and Wales until 6pm today, with 21 flood warnings across the UK.
