Parking charges reintroduced in some of Lancaster City Council's off-street car parks

The move follows the publication of the government’s “road map to recovery” from Covid-19.

From Friday May 15, charges will apply at its car parks in Morecambe, Heysham and Williamson Park.

However, city council car parks in and around Lancaster city centre will continue to remain free to help support key workers during the pandemic.

This is part of the council’s plans to help residents enjoy the outdoors and also manage the extra service demands of more people driving longer distances to visit the area.

Coun Dr Erica Lewis, leader of Lancaster City Council, said: “The coronavirus pandemic is far from over and many communities are still feeling its devastating effects.

“However, the government’s changes in approach means we are expecting more visitors. Lancaster City Council wants to take practical measures to facilitate residents enjoying our stunning coast without being crowded out by travelling tourists on a day out.

"We look forward to welcoming visitors back to Morecambe and the district, but for the moment the safest course is still to stay home and not make unnecessary trips."

As part of measures to ensure public safety and continue to reduce the spread of Covid-19, motorists using the car parks are asked to pay by Ring Go wherever possible. For more information or to register, visit www.ringgo.co.uk.

Council staff will also be ensuring additional cleaning of all payment machines, in a bid to reduce transmission.

This applies to city council-run car parks only, and private car park owner may operate differently. Motorists are advised to check individual sites before entering.

Lancashire County Council is continuing to enforce on-street parking restrictions as normal.
