Morecambe to pay tribute on Covid-19 National Day of Reflection

Morecambe Winter Gardens and the Eric Morecambe statue on the promenade will be lit up in yellow to form part of a national day of reflection to mark the anniversary of the UK's first Covid-19 lockdown.

Morecambe Business Improvement District (BID) is behind the initiative for Tuesday March 23.

The idea, originally mooted by the Marie Curie cancer charity, has been adopted nationally, and the light-up will follow a minute’s silence at noon, and people are encouraged to light up their doorsteps that evening.

The lighting display is being coordinated by Brent Lees, who is the chief lighting technician for the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster and provides the lighting displays at the Ashton Memorial.

He has worked with Morecambe BID for a number of years, including last year’s light up of some of Morecambe’s iconic historical buildings at Christmas.

The Winter Gardens will be lit with a golden frontage, using a number of discreetly placed lights that will enhance the features of the architecture.

The circle gallery and side room windows will be lit to reveal yellow interiors, in keeping with key buildings nationwide. The Eric Morecambe statue and gardens will be a golden yellow.
