Homes, homelessness, social housing, eco-housing, affordable housing, co-housing, homes strategy, poor housing stock, landlord unlawful practices, housing poverty – these are just some of the topics which are very relevant to people in the Lancaster district, and made much more important to many of them because of the problems and distress being caused by the current pandemic.

Lancaster City Council issued in mid-December their proposed Homes Strategy 2020–2025 for the Lancaster district and it is imperative that everyone who may be involved on any of the categories listed above should be able to make their concerns heard by the city council.

Lancaster Vision has joined with the city council to organise an online conference where residents throughout the district can hear from the council directly about what their new Homes Strategy will mean to them, engage in break out groups on specific aspects where their concerns can be heard, and generally be a part of the consultation process.

The online conference is being held on Thursday January 21 from 10am until 12:30pm.

Kathy Beaton, the city council’s Housing Strategy Officer, will provide an overview of the strategy, which will be followed by the breakout groups and feedback sessions:

Increasing and Improving the Supply of Social Housing: This workshop will be facilitated by Kathy Beaton, the council’s Principal Housing Strategy Officer, the lead officer responsible for the preparation of the Homes Strategy.

Housing Poverty: This workshop will be facilitated by Helen Greatorex, the CEO of Citizens Advice North Lancashire (CANL), with a background in housing law and policy. CANL provides specialist housing work across the district, challenging poor housing and unlawful landlord practices, and defending possession claims in Lancaster, Preston and Blackpool County Courts. CANL is passionate about the need to make good quality, affordable and secure housing available to all within the Lancaster district.

The Homes Strategy and the Climate Emergency: This workshop, headed by Kevin Frea, cabinet member for climate action, will explore the role of the Homes Strategy in relation to the council’s Climate Emergency declaration and evolving work to develop an action plan to tackle climate change.

Coun Caroline Jackson, the city council’s cabinet member with responsibility for housing, will hold a final plenary session, to include a summary of the refurbishment of Mainway, details of retro-fitting and responses to the climate emergency.
