Lancaster long distance charity walker returns home after six-month trek in aid of Palestine
Long distance charity walker Ruth Herbert has returned home to a rapturous welcome.
Ruth spent six-and-a-half months walking 2,444 miles from Arnside to Istanbul and raised more than £63,000 (including gift aid) for MAP – Medical Aid for Palestinians – a UK charity with more than 40 years’ experience in Gaza.
Ruth was welcomed by around 30 supporters and well wishers at Lancaster railway station.
The Strike Band added to the joyful atmosphere with their upbeat music, leading a procession through the city centre to The Cornerstone for further celebrations.

Ruth said: “I’ve received such a wonderful welcome in Lancaster. It’s incredible, and overwhelming! I received so much kindness all along my journey.
"This past week I have stopped off in Milton Keynes, Manchester and Blackburn, and received a lovely welcome in each place.
"It has been an incredible privilege to have done the Big Trek 4 Palestine. The work of MAP is needed more than ever, please keep donating.”
Deena Jayousi, a Palestinian from Lancaster, said: “I extend my deepest gratitude to Ruth, whose walk was not just a journey of miles but a journey of solidarity.

"By raising funds for MAP, she stands with the Palestinian people in their time of unimaginable suffering, helping provide vital medical aid to those affected by the ongoing devastation.
"Her compassion reminds us that every step taken in empathy brings hope to lives shattered by injustice.”
Writer Rilda Taneko said: “I'm truly impressed by Ruth's bravery and determination. Her selflessness and commitment to helping others in Palestine are truly admirable.
