Princess Alexandra Bridge is just beyond the junction of Moneyclose Lane near the Duke of Rothesay pub and takes traffic and pedestrians to the passenger ferries but also staff to Heysham power stations.

Despite the winter weather and the pandemic the work has gone well and as the project nears its closure teams from AMCO Griffen, the key contractors employed by EDF Energy, the stations’ owners, will have to close the bridge.

The initial plan is to close the bridge over six weekends from 10am on Friday to 6am on Monday, starting on August 21, with the last closure on Friday September 18.

Staff at the power stations and the port will have designated route in and out over weekends, and Moneyclose Lane will be dedicated to pedestrians and dog walkers.

Andy Gudgeon, project manager at Heysham 2 power station, is overseeing the work.

He said: “We have been pleased with how this major engineering project has gone, it’s vital that it gets this refurbishment as the bridge is the main route in and out of this area and so sees a lot of traffic.

“EDF has spoken to near neighbours and businesses during the project and we thank everyone for their patience as we close the bridge.”

During the year the EDF-funded project has seen the bridge structure painted and the replacement of joints and bearing. The bridge spans the rail line which links Heysham port to Lancaster railway station.
