St John’s Hospice’s regular Light Up a Life event has moved online this year, like so many events affected by the pandemic.

Instead of their usual church services, they’re hoping this year will help not only those reflecting on loved ones no longer with us, but also those who have had an impact on our lives or had to keep distance from over the last year.

The event, which will be available to view on the hospice’s Facebook page, will include readings, songs and videos, as well as a message from the hospice CEO, Sue McGraw.

Light Up a Life is a service of reflection, as well as celebration, as many people have been unable to grieve in the way they would have in another year.

With people missing loved ones who they have been unable to see because of restrictions, many of us are more appreciative of those still in our lives as well, and the event can be a way to honour them, or even watch together.

Natalie Santamera, Campaign and Appeal manager at St John’s Hospice, said: “We’re excited for everyone to see what we have been working on for Light Up a Life this year, and we hope as many people as possible join us in watching our event on Friday.

"We’ve worked really hard to reflect the sense of community of our usual event and added in new elements for supporters both old and new. It’s been a difficult project; fitting around the changing restrictions and making it as accessible as possible.

"We hope the Facebook premiere brings people together to watch and chat during the event and helps them to feel closer together.

"Another new feature added this year is the online picture gallery, where people can make a dedication in the name of a loved one with a message and a photo.

"It’s a lovely way to honour someone, and we’ve seen families group together to make a donation and share a happy memory; we hope people are finding comfort and community by sharing a reflective moment to think about those we love and miss – especially at this time of year.”
