Garstang publisher launches global anthology to give children everywhere a voice

A small independent publisher based in Garstang is calling on children and young people around the world to submit stories, poems and artwork for Beyond Borders, a new global anthology celebrating young voices from every corner of the globe.

Big Thinking Publishing (BTP), known for publishing authors and stories mainstream publishing often overlooks, is crowdfunding to bring the project to life, with a target of £1,700 to cover printing, postage and fair payment for the editor putting the anthology together.

The project draws on Garstang's own history as the first Fair Trade Town in the UK, and its twinning relationship with New Koforidua in Ghana – a partnership already built on the idea that opportunity shouldn't depend on where in the world a child was born. Garstang Town Council has registered its support for Beyond Borders, building on that existing link.

From September, BTP will partner with schools and libraries across the UK and internationally, including through twinned town relationships, to reach young writers and artists who might never otherwise have the chance to see their work published.

“I’ve spent years watching what happens to young people when you empower them – it changes how they see themselves,” said Kate Simkins, Owner of Big Thinking Publishing

“I want that moment for a child in a village on the other side of the world, not just the ones lucky enough to grow up in a certain postcode.”

Sandra D Perkins, Mayor of Garstang, said: “I want to work with our young people with whatever opportunity comes along.”

Every published contributor receives a free digital copy of the anthology; UK-based contributors also receive a free printed copy.

Submissions will open to children and young people worldwide, via schools, libraries, the Beyond Borders website and an open public call.

BTP's past anthologies have drawn more than 200 individual writers across seven issues, all free to submit to.

The crowdfunding campaign is live now on GoFundMe, with a target set at £1,700.
