Celebrating 35 years of Lancaster’s St Nicholas Arcades

Celebrating 35 years as a key part of Lancaster city life, St Nicholas Arcades (often known as St Nics) continues to be Lancaster’s premier undercover shopping destination.

Since its major redevelopment in the early 1990s, the centre has evolved into a thriving retail and community hub, welcoming nearly four million visitors each year.

Originally opened in the early 1970s, the shopping centre underwent significant refurbishment between 1989 and 1990.

Much of the original structure was replaced with the arcade layout seen today, creating a more modern shopping environment while carefully preserving the listed front façade, which was dismantled and rebuilt to maintain its original appearance.

For more than three decades, St Nicholas Arcades has remained at the heart of shopping, community life, and local business in Lancaster.

Over the years, it has become much more than a retail destination – it is a place where people meet friends, enjoy coffee, discover local businesses, and take part in community events.

The centre is home to a diverse mix of retailers, combining major high street names such as Next, Boots, Superdrug, Iceland and The Entertainer, with independent businesses, essential local services, cafés and restaurants including Vincenzo’s Café, Costa Coffee, and Subway.

Recent additions including Sports Direct, Shoezone, Grape Tree and My Dentist continue to strengthen the centre’s offering.

St Nicholas Arcades has adapted to changing shopping habits while maintaining a welcoming, safe, and accessible environment for visitors.

Alongside ongoing investment and tenant support, the centre also plays an active role in local community events and initiatives, often working closely with Lancaster BID.

To celebrate its 35th anniversary, St Nicholas Arcades hosts a special Spin The Wheel event on Wednesday May 27, giving shoppers the chance to win prizes while supporting businesses within the centre.

The anniversary also marks an exciting new chapter following the acquisition of the 160,000 sq ft site by Frasers Group in late 2024, signalling continued investment in the future of Lancaster city centre.
