Pensioners injured in Morecambe crash

Three elderly women suffered injuries after two cars collided in Morecambe on Thursday afternoon.

Traffic was brought to a standstill in Morecambe after the accident on the railway bridge at Hest Bank.

A Hyundai and a Nissan Qashqai collided in Marine Drive at around 2.45pm, leaving three women injured.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 75-year-old woman, suffered chest injuries, while the driver of the Nissan, also a 75-year-old woman, suffered facial injuries.

A 73-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Nissan was treated for hip injuries and bruising.

All three women were taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary for treatment.

The road was closed for four hours while accident investigators attended.

Police diverted traffic away from the scene, close to VVV Leisure Club.

There were tailbacks on Slyne Road, Low Lane, Broadway, Lancaster Road, Queen Street and Marine Road.

A section of Marine Drive was closed by police but was open again by 7pm.
