Travellers had to use rail replacements services to travel between Preston and Carlisle after Network Rail was forced to close the line due to flooding between Oxenholme and Tebay.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “There was a significant amount of fast flowing water on the track due to a large volume of water coming down and also swollen water levels in a nearby river.

“We were alerted at about 2.45pm and the line was insepcted and the decision made to shut it for a short while for safety reasons until the water had receded.

“The water level was above the railway line and so we couldn’t run any trains until it had dropped.”

Mobile pumping equipment was used to assist in clearing the line, and the track was fully reopened at 8.10pm.
