Parvo-virus reported in the area

A second case of canine Parvo-virus has been reported in the Lancaster area in the last two weeks, said Lancaster Veterinary Centre.

A spokesperson for the centre said: “Please make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date.

“This virus gives no second chances.”

Animal rescue charity Animal Care had to shut its dog kennels temporarily to stop a mystery virus spreading.

The charity took the unusual step of closing its kennels to all new rescue dogs after a young labrador cross was brought in and was taken ill.

The dog was treated at Lancaster Veterinary Centre but it is unclear whether it was suffering from parvo-virus.

The kennels have since reopened.

Abi Sadler, assistant manager at Animal Care, said: “Again, this is why it is so important for people to get all their vaccinations done for their pets.”

Canine parvovirus is a contagious virus mainly affecting dogs, and thought to originate in cats.

Parvo is highly contagious and is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their faeces.

Vaccines can prevent this infection, but mortality can reach 91% in untreated cases.

Treatment often involves veterinary hospitalization.

Canine parvovirus may infect other mammals; however, it will not infect humans.
