A great great grandmother will be joined by family and friends as she marks her 100th birthday today, Wednesday.

Gertrude Simpson was born on September 3, 1914, in Carlisle, moving to Lancaster at the age of 17 to take up nursing.

She married Robert Henry Simpson, who sadly died in 1983, and the couple had three daughters – twins Patricia and Pamela and their late sister Anne.

The family moved to Bolton-le-Sands in 1961, where Gertrude still lives.

She was an active member of both the Mothers’ Union and the Women’s Institute.

Gertrude now has plenty of family to keep her busy – four grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren, who will all be joining in the celebrations for the big day with a party.
