Park refurb done in time for Easter

Work to prepare Morecambe's newest play area for the busy spring and summer period has been completed .

And the play area has new benches next to it made out of old promenade storm boards that are no longer required.

Last year Lancaster City Council installed the new play area adjacent to the Eric Morecambe statue.

Tens of thousands of children have used the play area since it was installed, with many praising the innovative design.

Some on social media even likened the hill to the one in the Teletubbies  children’s programme, calling it the Teletubbie playground.

Now, in preparation for the expected busy Easter period, the park’s safety surfacing has received some TLC.

The work took around a week and saw new surfacing being laid to ensure the play area is in tip top shape.

The eagle eyed will have also spotted new benches  being installed in the area around the play area and statue.

Designed by local artists Kate Drummond and John Kingston, the benches make use of some of the old promenade storm boards that are no longer required.

Their vivid colours are a link to the Met Office weather warning system while also  lining up in aspects to the Morecambe Bay branding palette. New monolith style information signs will also be installed on  Marine Road Central, Central Drive and Pedder Street, along with new fingerposts in  various locations.

The new play area is part of the ‘Connecting Eric’ project, the aim of which has been to make better use of land  between the Clock Tower toilets and Northumberland Street.
