Time to celebrate top DJ Steve's 7,000th gig

I had a chance meeting with the ever-youthful Steve Middlesbrough and he was telling me later this year, he will be doing his 7,000th gig, and the vast majority of these have been in and around Morecambe.

I remember Steve from when I started to ‘hit the town’. He was the best club DJ around and, to be honest, I think he still is. I’m led to believe the difference between a good DJ and a poor one is keeping the dancefloor full.

When a good DJ is playing, you’ll never see the mad exodus which occurs when the momentum is lost and a brilliant dance tune is followed by something which kills the mood. I’m sure we’ve all seen this in action and often the dancers look at the DJ in disbelief before stalking off.

All too often the DJ hasn’t caught on to the crowd’s musical tastes and follows a set play list, or worse, personal favourites.

Not that I’m much of a dance man myself, it takes a lot of courage (or Strongbow) for me to get up on the dancefloor and I’m so clumsy that Carla spends her time trying to avoid me stamping on her feet.

This is probably why Carla rarely encourages me to dance, that and the fact that, after a few pints, I actually convince myself I have rhythm and can dance. The fact so many people now have mobile phones with cameras means there are plenty of videos online, proving I can’t.

Anyway, back to the point, I think it would be a great idea to organise something for Steve’s 7,000th anniversary. I’m pretty sure nearly the whole local population must have been entertained by Steve at some time in their lives.

An interesting thing which came out of our meeting is the fact Steve will pretty soon be on our TV screens in a programme featuring the infamous ‘Blobbygate’. I can’t say too much about this, as I don’t know much, however, I can’t wait to hear the facts about what went on and why it cost us, the taxpayers, so much.

Talking of taxpayers, Lancaster City Council will be publishing their budget cut proposals pretty soon and, considering the amount they have to save, I’m expecting these to be brutal.

It will be important for everyone to review these proposals and let your councillors know what you think. Remember they are only proposals at this stage, no done deals.

I’m hopeful there will be some innovative and creative ideas being put forward as cost savings as well as the obvious cuts which must be made due to Government cuts to local authority budgets.

Sometimes having to face hard choices brings about brilliant solutions and I know there are some very clever and very willing people in Morecambe whose ideas should be listened to and discussed.
