Ladyhawke back with third album Wild Things

Back in 2008 New Zealand based electronic act Ladyhawke made waves both critically and commercially with her debut self-titled album. It spawned five hit singles of which 'My Delirium' was the most successful. Real name Pip Brown, she is back with her third album '˜Wild Things.'

I caught up with Pip on the promotional trail for the new record and asked her why she spent the past four years out of the limelight.

“I toured the last record for about a year and then I stopped and had a bit of a break. I tried to start writing straight away and was working on material for quite a while and I wasn’t happy with any of it so I decided to just scrap it all and take a step back for a while. It was the best decision I ever made.”

You can always tell when music is made in a contrived manner. Somehow when people are put together in a room with the goal of making music, authenticity is hard to come by. When people meet, have a spark and get on well the creativity just flows and magic is made. Ladyhawke was introduced to producer Tommy English who was a friend of her neighbour’s. The two got on famously and decided to try writing together. They ended up spending a year in the studio and finally making a record Pip was proud of. “It just worked. We get on so well. We spent so much time in the studio and he brought his cute dog that would just bound into the studio and hang out. It was all done at his home studio too so in a really comfortable setting. It was a great vibe.”

The new album has a really positive upbeat feel to it and sounds great played on the radio on a sunny day.

“I’m in a really good place right now. Making the record was a really happy time for me and all those sunny days in LA.”

In case you are wondering about the name Ladyhawke, she named herself after a character played by Michelle Pfeiffer in the 1985 film of the same name because she sees herself as a pop superwoman. Well she certainly achieves that with her third album. You can also catch her touring the UK this summer.
