Health Secretary impressed with Royal Lancaster Infirmary visit

It would be wrong not to mention of the death of Jo Cox MP recently.

Her tragic death has shocked all of us in Westminster across the political divide and it is unthinkable that someone, a wife and mother, could be gunned down while carrying out her job.

I hope in time, once the full facts of what happened are known, this triggers a review and debate about MPs’ security but now I think our thoughts and prayers need to be with Jo’s family, her husband and two children at this terrible time.

Before news of this attack on Jo was broken, I welcomed the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt MP, to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

In recent years, the staff at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary have been demoralised by negative press surrounding the work they carry out.

The staff have not given up and, on a daily basis, have strived to give the best patient care they are able to give.

The trust board, under the leadership of chief executive Jackie Daniel and chairman Pearse Butler, have carried out some miraculous improvements to create a vibrant learning culture at the trust.

Following the trust being taken out of special measures in December and their continued improvements since then, I was delighted to take Mr Hunt to meet staff to thank them for their hard work and dedication, and hear about further plans for the future from the trust board.

I am immensely proud of all the staff who work at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and know from my numerous visits over the years that their dedication to the work they do is second to none.

I know Mr Hunt was impressed by the quality of care being provided at our hospital.
