‘Last week I called in to the Port of Lancaster Smokehouse while over in Glasson Dock to have a chat and see how business was going.

Nice to know that this great family run business is still going from strength to strength and looking to expand in the future.

I also managed to meet with the local Port Authority for a ‘catch-up’ and to see how they had faired following the recent storms.

One of the main issues that was raised with me was the increase in regulation for small ports such as Glasson and why they continue to be bound by the same strict regulations as a much larger port, such as Dover.

This is something that obviously puts a financial burden on the Port Authority and I will be trying to get some answers about this.

Fortunately the dock defences appear to have done their job during the recent storms – however a timely reminder of the need to maintain our sea defences both in Glasson and the surrounding areas.

That brings me on to a further meeting last week, this one with the Environment Agency to discuss the maintenance of the Sea Defences around the Thurnham and Cockersands area.

Following a proposal some years back to stop maintaining these defences and in their terms allow a “managed retreat ” in this area, the local community have convinced the Agency to at least maintain the defences for the next 30 years.

Clearly businesses and householders in Thurnham need security longer than 30 years, which is why we are all still challenging some of the Environment Agency’s calculations while exploring other options.

Finally, just across the way I also called in to Wallings Farm in Cockerham to have a look around and discuss their plans for the future.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that not only do they produce Ice-Cream on site – together with an ice cream parlour where you can sample this delicious brand, they also have a restaurant, garden centre, shop and butchers – so an ideal place visit if you are in the area.
