I’d like to thank all who contacted me following the first reading of my Gibraltar (Maritime Protection) Bill last week.
The House of Commons unanimously voted the bill through to the next stage which is the second reading.
The second reading is scheduled in the House of Commons for February of next year.
My badger vaccination debate was also successful. Thank you to everyone who has commented on that debate too.
On Friday I will speak to the pupils, staff, parents and governors of Skerton Community High School. As you are no doubt aware the consultation into the future of Skerton Community High School closes on Friday. It was felt by the whole school community that I should address the assembly because the consultation, which has been initiated by Lancashire County Council, has caused so much uncertainty particularly among pupils.
When I speak I hope that in particular the pupils of the school will at least go into the half-term break feeling positive. This consultation period has had a negative effect on many of the pupils and I will do what I can to boost morale.
I was pleased to see on Monday that the Prime Minister gave the go-ahead to the Hinkley Point nuclear power station. This is really good news for us here in Morecambe and Lunesdale because the key point is that the Government has been able to agree a strike price with EDF and global partners. Heysham 3 is designated for a new nuclear build and the Hinkley announcement brings Sizewell, Hartlepool and Heysham all closer to being reality which will be a big boost for the local economy.
I have a number of advice surgeries planned for the coming weeks. The next surgeries are planned for Friday November 15 and Friday December 6 at Tesco Carnforth.
My supermarket surgeries are drop-in surgeries so there is no need to make an appointment. Just come along on the day. Of course you can always contact my office if you need help and advice. My number is 01524 841225.
