David Morris column: Looking after our veterans

Last weekend I spent Remembrance Sunday in Morecambe attending the service at the cenotaph. Once again this was an extremely well organised service and a very poignant occasion, allowing those of us who were present the opportunity to remember those who did not return home.

It was also a pleasure to be able to spend time at the York Bridge Hotel afterwards with Mick Dennison and other ex service

Over the last week or so, I am certain you will have noticed either on social media or in the press about Harold Jellicoe Percival or Coe as he was known. Harold is the 99-year-old veteran who passed away recently in Lytham.

Fearing not many people would attend Harold’s funeral, the undertakers who were arranging his funeral placed an article in the local newspaper. The newspaper article was scanned and eventually spread over the internet via social media. The result was that hundreds of people came to Harold’s funeral on Monday.

It did get me thinking if we have any veterans in nursing homes in Morecambe and Lunesdale or indeed at home who do not have many visitors, please pass their contact details on to me and I will pass their details to one of our local veterans groups. It is important that we look after our veterans but of course especially important at this time of year when we remember those who did not return home.

Last Friday I was in the House of Commons for Third Reading of the EU Referendum Bill. I have been actively working on the Bill with James. I think it is vitally important that the people of Morecambe & Lunesdale decide if they want to be in or out of Europe.
