Over the last few days there have been press reports that EDF are to extend the lives of its existing power stations which includes Heysham 1 and Heysham 2.

I do welcome this news because it means that plans are in place for an exciting future of nuclear power here in Morecambe and Lunesdale which ultimately is good for our local economy and for those employed at Heysham.

As I have said before, the land next to Heysham 1 and 2 can only be used for a new nuclear build and the Government has approved that land for a new nuclear build, this means Heysham 1 and 2 will continue to generate nuclear power and there is land available for a new nuclear build.

I also think that it is significant that the Government recently agreed what is called a strike price for nuclear power produced at the new Hinkley Point nuclear power station, this means that the Government has shown a commitment to the future of nuclear energy.

On Friday I welcomed the Chancellor to the constituency, he first visited DST Group at White Lund where he had a tour of their premises meeting staff and group Chairman Russell Sanderson.

From White Lund, Russell and his team export specialist engineering products worldwide, Russell has been good at growing his exports to the Far East and United Arab Emirates.

As well as being involved in a number of major projects here in UK.

The Chancellor then took the short drive to Bare and visited local businesses including Abi’s Arrangements on Princes Crescent, it was Valentine’s Day so you can
imagine how busy Abi was getting all of the flowers ready.

The Chancellor then popped into Catherine’s on the Crescent café for a cup of tea.

What the Chancellor saw on his visit was some really excellent businesses and the opportunity to meet some shoppers because a number of people stopped to say hello or to have their photo taken with him.

My next surgery will be on Friday, March 7, to book an appointment please call my office on 01524 841225.
