Standing together with the people of Paris after terror attack

I would like to put on record my condolences for all of those who sadly lost their lives and for all of the people and their families who have been caught up in this tragic event.

It is unthinkable that an attack such as this could happen in such a vibrant and safe place but it just goes to show what a fantastic job our security services do on a daily basis keeping us safe from attacks just as these.

It is only a shame we do not get to hear of their many successes only when one of these horrific plots gets through.

I stand together with the people in Paris and show my support, Parisians are resilient and I have no doubt they will carry on in the face of these horrific acts of terrorism.

Our security forces have thwarted seven attacks this year in the UK and must never take their eye off the ball to ensure everyone in this country is safe.

The Home Secretary recently announced plans for a draft Investigatory Powers Bill, to ensure our security services have access to the data they need.

I support the sentiments of the draft bill which puts into legislation recommendations from an independent investigation into our terrorism legislation. The bill proposes the most transparent use of investigatory powers in the world.

The Bill will make it clear who has access to data and when that data is accused and stored.

It will ensue the correct checks and balances are put in place. It will also only enhance existing powers when there is an overwhelming case to do so.

This would have to be sanctioned by the Home Secretary, as it is now, but also sanctioned by a judge before the additional power can be accessed.

It will ensure no-one can hide from our security forces online and will ensure our teams can prevent attacks in the future.
